What is it? Be a Frontrunner! is a self-guided digital "social network with a social conscience" that teaches girls leadership skills while they create and contribute media to the cause of their choice. The goal of Be a Frontrunner! is to teach and inspire leadership in all girls, no matter what their strengths, and to help build confidence and self-esteem. Designed for the underserved age-group of tweens 9-14, Be a Frontrunner! will be an adult-curated multi-platform digital playground, where girls will be able to roam in a secure environment while at the same time feel they are in a social networking site "all their own." At the Be a Frontrunner! site each girl will choose from a myriad of "parties" related to her interest, like the "Cool Planet" party for future environmentalists, or the "Animal Lovers" party for fans of furry friends. As she dreams up and devises her very own page, she'll hone valuable leadership skills, by creating tangible creations like speeches, public service announcements, and press releases—all for a good cause, that is her party platform. Through organizing events and contests, she'll learn community building; and if she chooses, she can even run for office! The Be a Frontrunner! prototype was created by New View Films with assistance from the San Francisco Bay Area Video Coalition’s “Producer’s Institute for New Media Technologies."
